I have been in contact with David's ex-wife, Hedy, and Chicago friend, Sandy, since the auto crash on February 23rd.
For the record, David was invloved in a semi-trailer and 5 auto crash on the Tollway (I-294) in the northern Chicago suburbs around 1900 on the 23rd. David and Sandy were returning from a scouting trip in/around Sheboygan and Manitowoc, WI for Sandy's tour business. David called me whilst he was refueling Sandy's car in Kenosha, WI at 1810 to chat.
David was sleeping in the passenger front seat when the crash occurred. The roof and door of Sandy's car were cut away to remove David from the car. David suffered numerous broken ribs, collarbone, clavical and 2 cervical vertibrae.
He was transported to Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, IL and was in the trauma care unit.
David called me on both Saturday and Sunday morning for a couple of minutes each time. He sounded terrible both times but was looking forward to leaving the hospital in a few weeks. During Sunday's chat he said he stood up (with help) for the first time since the crash. When I said something about walking around he firmly corrected me saying he ONLY stood up. He told me on the 23rd he was planning to return to Las Vegas in 3 weeks or so.
I had made arrangements to visit David on March 2nd but was unable due to an extra delivery that took me away from that area.
On March 2nd, I was making calls with Hedy in Salt Lake City for updates as David's condition deteriorated during the day resulting with his passing last evening around 2000.
David's "family" was Sandy in Chicago and Hedy in Salt Lake City. Friends included the many Saabers here on TSN, Saabs United and the Turbo! e-list. David had no family other than an estranged brother in Las Vegas.
As I rarely check TSN for info please keep this thread going. I prefer to be e-mailed at jhox at wi.net as I cannot access TSN via Blackberry during the work day.
I will provide more information in a few days. I am devastated by David's passing.
