Okay full disclosure: I built/own two HTPCs and love them. Most of the time. At other times, it's good for them I don't own guns ;^)
An HTPC (home theater personal computer if you didn't know) is definitely the most flexible option for entertainment, especially video. Mine can play DVDs, HD-DVDs, Blu-rays, as well as almost any format of downloaded or ripped video and do a great job with all. Also record/play off-the-air TV as well as DirecTV.
But... issues with drivers, OS, file format compatibility, and DRM (copy protection) can drive you nuts. It takes a LOT of work to get one of these things working smoothly, and whenever a new media format comes out you get to do more work.
Also a lot of online providers (Amazon for example) will stream HD video directly to a TV or dedicated device (like a Roku box) but will *not* do so with a PC because they're afraid you'll pirate the material. I won't state my opinion of that policy here because it'd probably get me banned... ;^)
