a) European car prices are normally quoted inclusive of taxes, while US prices are normally quoted exclusive of taxes.
b) US MSRP prices quoted in the article are not meaningful because actual transaction prices are significantly lower.
Is pricing even a factor when talking about desirability of SAAB brand in the US? Base 9-3 compares very favorably with a lot of mainstream cars on price, being cheaper than a very long list of non-premium mid-size sedans (Accord/Camry/Altima/Mazda6/Legacy/Malibu/Fusion, etc.) This does not make it a hit with US consumers anyway. Price alone does not make a car popular in the US, as there are significant other factors that affect consumer behavior when it comes to cars. Reputation, perceived quality, total cost of ownership, etc.
This article makes it sound very simple, when in fact it is extremely complicated. Do I think there are steps SAAB USA can take to increase sales and profits? Absolutely. Do they have anything to do with price? Not necessarily!
