Living in an urban environment is another assumption. One could easily sell his $350k home in the city, buy a $100k home in a small town, thereby adding another $150k to your nest egg. Cost of living in the small town will be next to nothing. I think the only problem with the scenario is most people's need to constantly buy stuff. You can't count on high returns every year, but inflation tends to track the market, so if you're getting low returns then inflation is probably low. My fairly-average performing funds have returned an average compounded rate of return of 5.1% over the last 7 years, and that span includes one of the biggest market crashes of all time. I'm not sure how that happened if the 0% rate of return over the last 11 years in the market is in fact true.
