It allows for much quicker wheel change . . . it's scary to be changing a tire on the side of the highway, with cars zipping by.
I thought all 2010 9-5's are AWD Aero's . . . that means you can't use compact. All four wheels have to be comparable in size. Although I have not had a flat tire for almost a decade, I still throw a full size spare in the trunk when I'm expecting to drive significant distance from home. Being limited to 50mph with a spare far from home would not be fun, and could potentially be dangerous when one forgets the speed limit after a while.
