iirc (and I could be wrong, I'm going on memory here), Mercedes had an overly complex active headrest design ages (a decade earlier?) before Saab's SAHR, but only on their top model executive car, and my impression was it was full of electronics, rather than a brilliantly simple bit of engineering like SAHR. Volvo had their active headrests out around the same time as Saab + likes to claim they were first, but we all know better ;-)...
I like their comment about the radio in a Hyundai being "so crisp" and "better than your home stereo". Um. No. Not by a long shot. First of all, that is essentially impossible in a car environment (for so many reasons). I suppose they mean as compared to an average "department store stereo"... I remember Julian Vereker (the head of Naim*, before he passed away) commenting on his cars + love of driving + that he never has the stereo on when driving. Better to listen to the engine!
I agree, a simple car that is well built + designed to be safe + perform is better... most of those "innovations" are just gadgets + will break...
James...
*for those unaware of Naim, they make hifi, some of which is (ironically) more expensive than even a top end Hyundai car... I like to think of Naim as the Saab of high end hifi: really well built/engineered stuff with fantastic performance, yet slightly outcast as "ugly" to many who don't "get it"... not cheap, but not the most expensive either... both brands have become more mainstream with time... cult following etc... lots of parallels!
