We installed some inexpensive solar lights surrounding our in-ground pool when it was new back in 1987. Initially they worked OK, and lasted for 3 or 4 years. Lights would illuminate only at night as they had a photo-sensitive switch.
With all the improvements in both battery technology and photo-voltaic cells in the ensuing 20+ years I can only imagine the current lights to be fantastic.
