I have Tire Rack Pilot Exalto A/S tires on one car and Costco Pilot Exalto A/S tires on another car and there is no difference in appearance, handling or wear. On my 9-5 I put Pilot Sport A/S Plus from Costco, hardly a mass market tire. When I talked to the salesman, he said they could order virtually any tire Michelin made, which makes the "inferior Costco Michelin tire" theory suspect.
Normally, a manufacturer wants to protect their brand above all else. If they make a cheaper version of a product for a discount house, they usually insist on a private brand, or in some cases, a unique model number that separates the item from the rest of the line. As an example, a while back, Samsung made a special model HDTV with its own number that had less input options and cheaper speakers. In most cases, it is not worth it to do that and I haven't seen that recently.
