I've owned a bunch, and they have all been great, reliable and extremely fun cars.....mine have ranged from a '69 911S, a '72 911 and '73 911 (each modified hotrods)and a 78 911SC.....probably did 30,000 miles between the 4 cars, none daily drives, all have been very reliable and not horribly expensive to own or maintain
the Porsche community is fantastic, wonderful people helping each other other, much like those around here....if you are handy, you can keep them running on your own.....if you plan to have someone else wrench on them, they can be expensive, but they don't have to be, if you find the right mechanic.
check out the 89-93 964 chassis cars, all the best characteristics of the classic 911's, yet modern conveniences and comfort.....you can get a very nice one for around $20k these days.
