A variant of this thread (i.e., my sub-thread) has played out many times on multiple forums I have frequented over the years. The supposition is that the engine is more efficient at the higher rpm, hence one gets better gas mileage at that point. This means downshifting, or higher velocity in highest gear (and increased aerodynamic drag).
I am unconvinced.
I realize that we're talking turbo boost here, not exclusively rpm, but unless you create some kind of artificial drag on the car to require additional boost (and how is that going to give you better mpg), it's going to be comparable to rpm management.
By no means to I mean to say that a particular engine doesn't have optimum efficiency rpm, but that's great in a laboratory, for measuring combustion cycle efficiency. Real life, for gas mileage efficiency, I think you want highest gear, lowest rpm.
