GM is a multi-naitonal business, and they reported profits in the country with the lowest tax rates. All US sales of SAABs were reported in the US income column, all manufacturing costs were reported in the Sweden expense column.
When SAAB was prevented from realizing income from the sale of 30% of their products due to tax manuvers by their parent company, how could SAAB be expected to report a profit?
