It all depends on how active / passive he wants to be, how much time to spend & how much money to invest. Individual stock investing, commodities, etc is for active investors... just look at how many of the fortune 500 didn't exist 50 years ago. If he does not want to be active or spend a lot of time, my first thought was also "Target Year Funds". If he wants to get a little more active, then he can match the general portfolio on his own but he will have to occasionally re-balance (which will cost him). This could also be a good way to dip his toe in and start to build up a portfolio while he learns. Once it gets bigger, then he could start branching out from there, even if it is moving towards equity funds like the Fairholme Fund & follow how that fund manager invests.
The general #1 rule, is that if your company matches a 401K then do that as its "free" money.
If you go with funds, pay attention to the fees.
