Letting someone you don't know do the correction is ALWAYS a good plan. When my wife decided to learn to drive (at age 23, she couldn't earlier due to neurological issues), I remembered my Dad yelling at me as I attempted to master the clutch on our vomit-and-white colored '58 Ford wagon. Then I hired a driving school, best $200 I ever spent.
As far as the manuals go, our cars have always been manuals...she first drove our M-B 250S, giant sedan with an interior larger than some living rooms, 6-cyl in-line with two Zenith carbs and a 4 speed. Forty years and fourteen SAABs later, she's insistent on a manual transmission, and is easier on it than I am.
