With 160K miles it all depends on service records and what has been replaced already.
I have a 96 960 wagon myself and it has been bullet proof except that lately the heater core has starting to leak. That can happen on these cars just like many other brands but the bad part is that the complete dashboard and HVAC housing has to come out to replace it so it has to wait.
But the heater core is not nearly as fail prone as the Saab 9000 and Volvo 850/70 models and in my case it could stem from the overheat session and blown head gasket that happened when the former owner drove it dry with a cooling hose ruptured.
These are the last "real" Volvo's with real wheel drive and not many gadgets or Network systems like all new cars. Basic design and sturdy but not fuel efficient.
