Natural disasters are one thing. While Nature can make things can go south in a really big way, at least in a developed country most people probably wouldn't really be in a true survival situation for very long. So having food, water, some medical stuff, fuel for a generator and some type of transport is reasonable. We've gone over a week without power in mid-winter due to ice and snow. As long as I can run the generator occasionally we're good with a wood stove and camping in the house. Could go longer, it's just inconvenient and annoying.
Bigger stuff, like a global war, massive economic meltdown, or a meteor strike is very different. I'm not sure you can really prepare for that unless you go into major survivalist mode with a couple years of food, hidden shelter, weaponry, etc. Even then, depending on the disaster, it may not be enough. And if it's major war or a meteor, it might not be worth the effort.
