A recurrent topic hereabouts...

I did a '95 9000 for my daughter. One year of HS and four of college. It worked fine, and I fixed stuff when she came home (3 hours away). But I worried a lot about some weird failure. But is was okay and we nursed a leaking heater core for 4 years.
If i did it over, though, I'd go for something Japanese with decent service records. You can get them fixed lots of places and they don't break down a whole lot. Yotas, Hondas, and Missans are great. Mazdas are more fun to drive. Subies are fine but can get pricey due to the AWD system, and need for pull-the-engine head gasket jobs.
OTOH, there's a lot to be said for a domestic. Malibu, Taurus, Impala, Grand Ams, or maybe an Olds Intrigue. You can get them fixed anyplace new and used parts are plentiful and if they've been decently maintained they can have a staggering indifference to deferred maintenance. Justin is right about the auto trannies on the Taurus, but if you find one where the trans has been changed it could be a good car. I actually considered one before a friend offered up the '95 9K.
Also think about how long you want the car to last beyond college. If you think you want it to go a couple years past graduation you may need to think differently about what you buy.
