Yes, the US had gasoline during WWI, but it was rationed. Maybe not as compelling a reason as Sweden had to invent new fuel technologies.
My father was a tanker pilot in the US Merchant Marines during WWII. One of his more dangerous runs was bringing oil to Sweden via the North Atlantic during winter. Lots of stories of storms, huge waves, etc. - not to mention U-boats.
