There are cheaper places for sure... quality does vary and it's hard to tell on the internet.
There are some nice and reasonably priced appartments in the Lowry area of Denver... The Grand Lowry Lofts are a good starter place. Also Check out AMLI at Lowry... nice quality. The location is central to most everything.
I also recommend East Denver in terms of location and price. When I first moved out here, I lived at a place called Spyglass Hill (east denver). The rent was cheap... no frills place but it got the job done. I still reminisce when I pass by it! I just checked their website... $640/mo for about 700sq feet 1br 1 ba.
Tell your son that the beautiful thing about living in Colorado is that the mtns are always in your back yard. Better to commute to the mtns on your days off than have to commute to work every day or night.
I moved out here to start my life after college in 2000 and still love it.
Best of luck to your son!
