I dunno. I did about 500 miles in one in LA a month or so back and came away liking the Sonata. I was seeing 30-33 on the highway if I kept my foot out of it. On the other hand I averaged 24-25 mpg for the whole trip, which included some hard driving in the mountains and a bunch of stop and go traffic and suburban driving.
The highway tracking was ok sometimes, not so good others. Seemed to tramline a bit but mostly on the more worn sections of freeway. My first thought was that it needed some decent tires.
Handling, for a mainline sedan is OK, and I flogged it up a switchbacked road in the San Gabriel mountains. It clearly needed firmer shocks and a stiffer rear sway bar (in addition to better tires) but that's no different than a lot of other cars. It's not a Saab, but then Saabs also need firmer shocks, decent tires and better sway bars to cut down the understeer. I don't think they're overhyped, and are certainly worth looking at, especially for people considering Camry/Accord/Altima.
