I am sorry to hear this news. If it was in the WSJ, I missed it. During my last assignment with Caterpillar before retirement, I was involved in a fair amount of business analysis, primarily focused on competitors, and with some experience in the Chinese market. Based that experience, I have three observations:
1. Beware the rumor mill.
2. Neither of the two Chinese companies are, as I recall, major auto manufacturers, and short-term capital infusions generally don't lead to longer-term competitive strength. There are exceptions, but the ultimate test here will be competitive, desirable product + sales volume. That's a big bet given the track record.
3. Current Saab owners should consider whether to capitalize on opportunities to buy cars at close-out prices should the worst-case scenario develop, or whether to cash out in the near term and cut losses. Risks and rewards on both sides.
I will be very sorry if Saab fails. There are few cars I like as well, and fewer that I like better. The signs, however, are inauspicious.
