Unfortunately, imho, the fact that your current brand X appliance has lasted +20 years has no bearing on the performance of a new one. From talking to an experienced appliance repair guy, they really do not build them like they used to. To quote him: "they all break" and "they seem engineered to last about 7 years". Things that used to be made from metal are made from plastic, stuff that used to be high-grade plastic is now lower grade.
I speculate that this has something to do with the housing bubble and everyone's pursuit of the lowest cost item. 7 years, iirc, at one time was the average time people used to stay in a home. The expectation is that the new owners will buy new appliances (repeat every 7 years on avg). On the positive side, today's appliance is much cheaper (if you account for inflation).
My wife keeps nagging me to replace our 13yr old kitchen appliances (they're not SS), but my guess is the current ones will probably last as long as the new ones.
It's hard to find stuff that lasts anymore...
