as always, there's more complete info on SU: SAAB will file the reconstruction appeal asap + the unions can + will withdraw their request if it goes through. It was the central union that did the go ahead on the request, in spite of the local union office which was going to wait a few more days.
I agree that the workers are not to be blamed for the current situation. Honestly, this crisis should have been averted by recognizing an impending potential cash flow problem sooner + acting sooner to get investment before crisis (before the need to shut down production).
That said, SAAB is now a startup (since the release from GM). I know the automotive business is very union oriented, but largely because the companies have been around for a long time. Startups in high tech rarely are unionized + would probably fail if they were. I think SAAB needs a similar business model to a high tech startup given the risk/reward status right now. As an engineer in high tech, I've experienced things like forced shutdown days (where no pay, but it's a day off, not your choosing) as a tactic to reduce the number of layoffs. Not great (effectively a short term pay cut) but not terrible either because it keeps the team together. But it is the kind of thing unions don't tend to approve of. Imho, ditch the union, offer employees stock options on the basis of performance...
I don't mean to be controversial... this is just my opinion based on my own experience. Efforts to unionize even blue collar high tech workers usually fail: the lure of upside reward exceeds the benefits of union membership. certainly does for me personally... of course ymmv...
