Going to small claims court may or may not work out for you, but you can be 100% sure that it will suck up a bunch of effort, lots of time and much aggravation (been there, done that, won my case on my third amended complaint ... but?). Note that every visit to my local courthouse requires driving there, parking in a parking structure a block away, standing in long lines to get screened for weapons, standing in other lines to file your forms, or waiting for the cases before yours to be called and tried, etc. So, basically 1.5 hours minimum for each visit.
Oh, and even after you win your case, there is NO guarantee that your former landlady will actually pay you, which will require another appearance in court for collections, and another round of sending an official summons. After you win that and she still doesn't pay, you could perhaps garnish her wages (if she works), put a lien on her property, or she could declare bankruptcy (what my defendant did), etc.
I would be sufficiently POed at this point to "come out with guns blazing" and do whatever I could to make her pay in one way or another. Am I being a jerk? Having gone the small claims court route once, I think that I am being realistic.
