Old pickups are great looking, but horrible to drive... '60s and '70s trucks are rough-riding beasts with no amenities, one step up from a tractor. They are also quite unsafe with little to no rollover protection, primitive suspensions, and questionable engineering. Pickups from back in the day were designed to get around town and on the farm, not be driven by average people at 70mph on the freeway. :)
Old may mean simple, but it doesn't mean easy to maintain - body panels, glass, trim, etc. is usually simply not available or available only through expensive, specialty restoration outlets. When you look through old truck ads, consider the importance of "all glass intact" and what that means to you when your windshield takes a rock.
An old Apache or F100 would be super cool to own, just don't delude yourself into thinking it's a cheap alternative to a more modern vehicle. They're not, and whatever time you save by not having an air conditioning system to maintain you'll spend trying to track down a good/used throttle linkage or transmission tailshaft seal.
A good friend of mine has a beautiful '53 Ford he's slowly working on restoring, and it's a challenge. He gave up on the 223 and 3-speed quite some time ago because keeping it running was a chore. Now the truck sits on a '94 (IIRC) C4 chassis with an LT1 and a 4L60. A bit nicer to drive with 300hp and fully independent suspension... :) If you like the looks of an older truck, maybe consider going this route and finding someone who has stuck an older body on newer running gear. It takes a lot of headache out of classic car ownership (assuming the work was done right!)
