I work for A123 Systems, a direct competitor of Boston Power in the advanced Lithium-Ion battery business. We are also a Massachusetts based company. We have taken the opposite approach. We had been building batteries in exclusively in Asia (Korea & China) for years but recently moved much of the battery production back to the US. About 90% of the cost of an advanced battery is in raw materials, not labor - so I don't buy the "huge" cost savings. That said, the manuafacturing expertise in producing batteries has been based in Asia (first Japan, then Korea, now China). We made the decision to do what Japan did to the US electronics industry back in the 1960's. That is to adopt (or outright buy or license) the manufacturing practices of the country that was the most advanced. In two years we went from less than 100 employees to over 1,000 workers in Michigan in a new facility that is state of the art. Those are jobs that would otherwise be done by Chinese workers. A wise move? Time will tell. We will still manufacture in Asia, but for the Asian market only. Right now we are providing product for Fisker, GM and numerous truck/bus fleet programs in the US (as well as Europe). Hopefully one day Saab - because our product kicks Boston Power's butt! <g>
