It's good to see this practical approach. Certainly the lower end of the Maine Turnpike is a hazardous area, as are most of the roads around Portland where it can get pretty congested--and tourist ridden. I always see cops there. Don't go faster than the flow of traffic!
Further north it makes sense to raise the limits. The Turnpike and I-95 flow real well at 75 or so once you're north of Portland and lose some of the tourists, and especially above Augusta. Off the main roads I find Maine is pretty reasonable speedwise. Unlike NH where the state cops and local yokels pull people over just for grins.
