A lifetime ago I was a "tire monkey" for Two Guys (a now long-gone New Jersey institution), working my way through college. This was in the days when one chose between 4-ply, bias-belted, or the new-fangled radial tires, and we had R-12 refrigerant on the shelf for a buck a can. I actually took a lot of care with customers' cars, many specifically requested that I work on them when they came in, and I got good tips.
Today what I usually do is take the wheels off the car and bring those to the tire shop, mainly to make sure they don't try to jack up the rear of my C900 or 9000 by the bendable rear axle and to make sure the lugs get properly torqued. Also gives me a chance to inspect brakes, etc.
Sears is pretty much the bottom of the barrel unless you get lucky and get some kid who (like myself back in the day) actually gives a crap about what he's doing.
