Not sure I would invest in a Wii right now. The successor has already been announced and while it's still 6-9 months out that means future title availability for the Wii will be limited. If you're happy with what's out there now that may not be a problem for you, but it's something to be aware of.

That said, title availability for young kids is probably superior on the Wii. Lots more family friendly activities, and I know my girl and my parents have enjoyed a lot of time with the Wii. That said, it hasn't been powered on once since Christmas of *last* year... the Wii has extremely limited hardware, which means most of the titles are simplistic. It's very exciting at first, but repetitive game play and lack of variety mean you don't ultimately get a lot of enjoyment out of most titles. You can only play indoor ultimate frisbee so many times...

The Xbox has superior hardware at every level, and Kinect is much more convenient than handheld controllers. The technology is a little mind boggling and a little creepy. There aren't nearly as many titles for Kinect as Wii, and of them even fewer are family friendly. That may or may not change - Xbox still has some good years left on it, but as a harder-core gaming system primary development of this stuff is by people making more adult games. What comes out for kids down the road may be disappointing - or Microsoft may use this opportunity to put some distance between Kinect and Wii before Wii U revitalizes Nintendo's market. If solely the dance titles are the appeal, Xbox is head and shoulders above anything the Wii has to offer and may be enough to justify the purchase. It's really that much better.

My money would go towards the Xbox. I think it will grow better with the girls and may bring some entertainment for you. (Seriously, Forza 4 is worth owning an Xbox for ;). Kinect just has more potential. Probably has better resale value, too, so if it really doesn't work out next Christmas you can trade it on a Wii U...

You will *need* the 250gb Xbox, so hopefully that has been in your math. The HDD is needed to store downloaded content, and you'll blow through the 4gb model very quickly. Keep your eye out this holiday seasons for the gift card deals - someone just ran a "buy a 250gb Kinect system, get a $100 gift card." Those are the best deals right now.
