I am well aware of the Triumph connection and implied it in my comment: "the engine + pretty much all else had diverged enough from the original roots, that the roots itself were Saab heritage"...
sure those engines were originally based on a Triumph slant 4, but by 1988, when the SiS was released, it had been integrated + updated by SAAB for so many years (since the early '70's), that imho, the engine (including the Triumph connection) became a piece of "pure SAAB heritage". Though there are similarities, there is plenty of difference between an early B and the 16 valve turbo in an SiS. Nevermind that saab was still making these engines more than a decade after Triumph discontinued them!
I'm not saying that one saab is "pure" and another isn't (even the 2 stroke engines were derivative, most engineering is!)... I agree that it is silly... I'm not even really slagging GM (though I don't feel GM was all good, it was not all bad either: 2 decades of moderate stability)... I own a 9-5 and it's great... definitely a Saab... but I don't think the original poster's comment was that unreasonable either. The SiS is a collectible icon. If it isn't an example of SAAB heritage, what is? is there no "pure saab heritage"? I'd like to think otherwise (and I'd like to think that some of it is post GM also! SAHR being but 1 example!)...
Lots could go wrong with a move of control to China... I hope for the best, but to some extent I share his concerns...
James...
