1. Call the NY Attorney General and explain the situation. I imagine you will get help or at least an understanding of your legal position.
2. I would start climbing the chain of command with Ally. They have an obligation to resolve this. Don't settle for corporate BS - FEDX overnight a letter threatening legal action for all costs to the CEO. Do a little digging and get the name and address. Put "confidential legal documents" or something like that on the FEDX. Someone will call you via his/her office and see that it gets corrected.
If 1 & 2 don't help, find an attorney recommended by someone you trust. A simple letter should get some action. Most good attorney's do this sort of work for entertainment value.
FWIW - when this happened with mortgages in the first SB crisis (things like title & mortgage release errors made by banks that no longer existed adn could therefore not be corrected), most all states passed laws allowing the previous or new attorney to send certified letters to the non-existent banks - and when they were returned as undeliverable - file a form that cleared the title. Similar legislation may be needed for cars.
