It was a very nice car, and was even available as a hatchback! Unfortunately, what could have been a great combination of Japanese precision and reliability and English charm and craftsmanship ended up as a nicely appointed and problematic Honda. Nothing fundamentally bad, but electric issues plagued most owners. The mechanicals will go forever just like the Legend they're based on. I was excited to see one at the RDU airport just a couple of years ago, so they are still on the road. I'd honestly be tempted to pick up a 5-speed, hatch model in good condition if I came across one!
Ed F, I can't believe you got to experience a Sterling kit car! Man, VW kit cars are crazy beasts. I can see why they were popular when all cars were more basic and especially when so many cars were slow and ugly in the '70s, but yes, they're far from living up to modern expectations (as you can imagine a fiberglass shell bolted onto a cut up VW Beetle in someone garage might not be).
