it works if the word is completely illegible (i.e. no human could read it)

basically the way the recaptcha system works is that one word they know, and one word they don't. they're making sure you type the one they know correctly, and hoping you can tell them the answer to the one they don't know. but sometimes you get one that's completely illegible...
