Thoughts on storing car and wheel bearings? Posted by bender [Email] (#268) [Profile/Gallery] (more from bender) on Fri, 2 Mar 2012 09:26:38 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
So I spoke to my indie mechanic a couple of weeks ago and what I found strange is that he told me he actually *lowers* his tire pressure, not ups it because he said that the whole weight of the car is sitting on one of the balls inside the wheel bearing. Since the ground always moves a bit, it can damage them.
He drew a little picture, and I get the fact that one of those little spheres inside the bearing does carry more of a load (the one directly in the bottom, if it happens to be there) but is it really that much of a concern? I mean, how much does the ground move?! Unless you're in an area that has some minor earthquakes... He said the cars that were transported in trains all needed new wheel bearings because of this, but on a train I'd understand...
I find it interesting how everyone has their own little theory about each and every little thing when it comes to storing cars. I'm not really worried about it, I've stored my car for about five years but I just wanted to hear what you thought about his theory.
