looking for a cheap low profile blank key that would open the door (and could be immersed in salt water). The idea was to make a "transponder fob" I could unhook from the mechanical only key shaft + leave the fob in the car while taking the shaft (to open the door) in my wetsuit while surfing...
Saab doesn't make one for a 2004+ 9-5, so I asked around at locksmiths. Ilco offers keys that work for the older 9-5's and 9-3's with and without transponder chips (quick google search yielded p/n YM30T5, but double check with your locksmith). I'm pretty sure one can get one with a fob also. What they didn't have (last summer) was one with the thicker shaft of the newer key. As it was explained to me by the locksmith - there tends to be IP protection of the newest keys + Ilco would make it if they could (I assume by that he meant legally)... likely the key blank will appear soon or in the next couple years...
A locksmith (with the right tooling to work on automotive sidewinders) can cut the keys (typically they charge $10 + the cost of the blank). You'd still need a tech2 to program the car and you need at least one good key for them to copy (mechanically). I ended up just getting an extra Saab key because there was no other option for 2004+...
