I do agree that ESP significantly helps should things go wrong, but it can't break the laws of physics. So if the grip on the front axle differs too much from the rear one, then you're gone. As some say it only differs whether you'll be buried in an open or enclosed coffin.
Also, I can't help to note that different makes tune and calibrate ESP assistant differently. Some engage earlier then others, some do it gentle (while some do it really hard and nervous). So ESP's are different and the level of assistance from them is different as well.
One local car magazine was tasting some Mitsu SUV with wrong angle at rear suspension and they hit the marbles on the moose test despite ESP that that car was equipped with (actually, this story isn't about tires, but more about different ESP settings and different cars differently sensible to suspension settings).
