My aunt lives one kilometer from the Confederation Bridge. She has a beautiful bed and breakfast, which is essentially a beautifully furnished 2 bedroom cottage that is separate from the master home. It is all decorated with sea shell art. She is an artist and sells antiques for a living. You get all that for $125 CAD a night I believe. The area around there is beautiful with several provincial and national parks. I loved staying up there, went one weekend several years ago. Her place is literally one kilometer from where the old passenger/car/rail ferries used to travel out of. When I visited in July, they had one of their warmest days. It was 80 degrees out and the water was about 74 degrees. This "warm" body of water is named the Northumberland Strait. Best kept secret in terms of warm water north of Cape Cod in the summer. I absolutely adore the area. I visited PEI while I was there. Crossing is free but coming back is $40 CAD! Very expensive but hey it's about 13 miles long I think, the government has to pay it off someway. Very cool crossing, you are about 30 feet off the water (it is simply a causeway). PEI is absolutely gorgeous. Charlottetown in my opinion is very commercial, but there are many places on PEI that peaceful, serene, and far more rustic.
When I travelled there I took the following route. Started in Massachusetts on the normal highways, ended up getting off I-95 in Bangor. Then followed Route 1 up the coast through Ellsworth, Machias, etc. to Calais. Then crossed the border at Calais (US) and St. Stephen (CA). Then followed the main route up to St. John then to Moncton then another major highway to my aunt's. From her place near the bridge it only takes about 1.5 to 2 hours to Halifax. In that amount of driving, I never saw one cop. Just don't go any more than 10 over the speed limit and you should be fine. Absolutely gorgeous area; it is peaceful, rustic and full of extremely nice people. Make sure to get yourself a real good seafood meal. There are many excellent yet "local" restaurants with good prices and great service.
If you are interested in staying at my aunt's bed and breakfast, send me a message (I put my email up there) or if you are looking for my pointers/places to stop, let me know. I would be happy to help. Seriously, you will love the trip. One of my favorite places in the world is New Brunswick. It is a well kept Canadian secret. Plus property is very very cheap up there. I would love to retire there someday even with their lousy winters. My aunt always tells me they get winter storms with winds between 75 and 100 mph which has to be amazing. You can google her website which is The Country Decorator Holiday House. For the money it is a great stay. Tell her that her nephew Ryan sent you.
Enjoy your trip! You will love it!
