After reading Lutz's excerpts & seeing the Top Gear piece on Saab there were probably missteps & mismatches on both sides... GM not knowing what to do with Saab & Saab "over building" cars that they either could not get the market in general to recognize fully and/or just wasn't willing to pay for that value.
Saab has always done a really poor job of explaining themselves to the market. For example the center mounted ignition seems "quirky" but when explained (safer in a crash especially on the knees, better ergonomics & better security) it makes total sense, doesn't seem quirky but very thoughtful & makes one wonder why everyone doesn't do it.
You don't have to just build a better mouse trap... the world has to recognize its better.
