I haven't had issues with cranes... just herons & egrets... not eating fish but sitting on the boat & leaving presents. Rubber snakes don't work over time as some other bird or animal thinks its a potential meal. Plastic owls can work, but if they are too stationary, it seems some birds figure it out. A partial solution for that is to hang the owl or put it on the springed post (think bobble head).
I like the fishing string idea. At work, one of the decorative/retention ponds has some line strung over it to keep the geese out, and it works. You can always try what they have in the other decorative/retention pond, swans.
But the most fun is to throw something at them... we would occasionally throw (or rather lob) ice cubes at the herons... which would just melt away where ever they landed. Don't worry no herons were ever hurt as they would see the ice coming & just fly away.
