I believe that the Omni was really a modified Talbot Sunbeam - this was a brand that Chrysler had something to do with, not sure on the exact relationship.
Note that Omnis were available in the US with different packages, making them less slothful, and designed to compete with the VW GTI. My brother had an Omni GLH (advertised as "Goes Like Hell" vs. my bro's experience of "Runs Like Hell") that had been slightly "Shelbyized", i.e. different trans ratios, firmer suspension, large alloy wheels w/ low profile tires, etc. At some point you could get a turbo in these as well.
