My 9000 Aero has a sport exhaust and is a little louder than stock. My driveway is 250' long. If I'm standing 5' from my running Saab and a Harley goes by on the street (again, 250' away) I can't hear my car over the Harley. That's not just "a little loud", it's earsplitting. And yes the problem is not limited to Harleys but it seems like 90% of Harleys have loud exhausts whereas about 15% of other bikes do.
I know this will sound harsh, but the "loud pipes save lives" people are people whose lives I don't want to save. Sorry, but if you have no respect whatsoever for my welfare, why should I have any for yours?
I will say, although I think the "loud pipes save lives" argument is somewhere between weak and ridiculous, I do think there should be more education and law enforcement emphasis on car/truck/etc. drivers doing stupid things that endanger motorcyclists. Just last Friday I was stopped at light behind a box truck with a motorcycle behind me. The truck had turned a bit to the right and had its right turn signal on. Having followed him for a bit and knowing the driver was an idiot, when the light turned green I (going straight) quickly accelerated past the truck. The motorcyclist obviously knew the guy was an idiot too because he hung way back. Which was good because the truck then proceeded to make a left turn! With his right signal still on. If the guy on the bike had followed me at a normal distance, I'm certain he would have been run over by the truck.
