I pay $40/month for 500 min + unlimited data on T-mobile (grandfathered in). I can tether at 10Mb/sec.
T-Mobile has a prepaid plan for $30/month for 5GB 3-4G / unlimited 2G data with 100 talk minutes. If you use Google Voice and SIP phone app you can call without using talk minutes, otherwise extra minutes are $0.10/min.
Prepaid AT&T plans are something like $40/month - not sure about the fine details.
When I upgrade the phone I can sell my unlock old phone for much more $$$.
Verizon does not work with unlocked phones - so yes, makes sense to buy subsidized phone if one has to stick with Verizon.
Even in subsidized form Nexus is $200 less than iPhone, and as I said I would have pick it even if the price were the same.
