Just had this discussion on a business trip last week while the driver (not me) was trying to determine if the rental Dodge Avenger had the V-6 just by judging foot on the floor acceleration.
I can tell you the Dodge Challenger Hemi that a colleague I was traveling with last month was test driven by a lot other people (myself included), and the only reason it got returned with any tread on the rear tires is because you couldn't completely turn off traction control. The Fiat 500 another guy had on that same trip got test driven lot too, (myself included).
I'm guessing with computer controls its harder to really flog an engine these days... but I wouldn't buy one without a really good inspection (including making sure they actually changed the oil) and factoring in the cost of a really good interior detail (although that one probably applies to all used cars).
One thing to be careful on is if the car was de-optioned. There was that case several years ago with the Impalas where the rental company bought them without side air bags (although a standard feature) and sold them that way without informing the buyers.
