Spent 3 1/2 years there for Caterpillar, at our facility in the North East near Newcastle. There are some issues with work permits, but once that is arranged, the process is pretty easy. Main issue will be to find a tax accounting firm that can deal with the two systems. In our case, the company provided that service. Re: income, I'd guess you'll need about 30% add'l income to match living standard here, maybe more. Nearly everything costs more. Example: Car price denominated in Pounds Sterling is similar to price here, but Pound Sterling is at a 60% exchange rate premium. So a Honda priced at 25K Pounds Sterling would be about $40K U.S.
Fuel is $8 or so per U.S. gallon. Car insurance expensive and goes with individual, not the car (so you visiting relative cannot drive your car unless you put on policy). Need to get a British license -- rigorous written and driving test.
Part of what you gain is the experience of living and working in another culture, and that is priceless. Need to open up your mind and accept idiosyncrasies just as Brits do coming here.
We chose to concentrate on the good experiences and ignore the few inconveniences (e.g under-counter size fridges and poor customer service on nearly everything except automotive). Excellent fresh fish, bread, vegetables and fruit. Meat, fish, eggs, dairy more expensive. Scottish beef better choice but costs more. Wine and beer more. English beer and ale at the pub, hand-pulled, to be savored.
Pretty good transportation service via rail. National Health System OK, and can be excellent (can also be pretty bad); low cost.
Lot of folks rent TVs, so used TV from rental center often a better buy than brand new. Discount stores just beginning to catch on, and government policies limit price differences.
Do some research, see if you think you'll like, pack up and go. We regarded as second home, and would not have missed experience for anything. Will try to answer specific questions if you wish.
