I went to tour "Doc" the B29 in resto at Boeing in Wichita. It might be better than a new one when they are done with it. We walked up a scaffold ladder through what would be the nose, and spent some time inside - the entire aircraft was being wired and rigged back to new condition, but improved with our generation of instruments, avionics, etc. I wanted to take pictures, but it was a controlled area as 767 tanker program and KC135 fuel boom work was being done in adjacent hangers, so security was high. Apparently, work on Doc was suspended during a time when no volunteers were allowed on that side of the facility.
In 1983, I was in San Antonio at Fairchild Aircraft, and Fifi was on the ramp next to Fairchild without the props. We could see the aircraft through the windows of the tool department I was in, and an old fellow at a drafting table was listening to our conversation.....he didn't say much, but later in conversation indicated that he was a crew member on the aircraft during military duty. What a coincidence.....
My treasure after the visit was a gift of a piece of the aluminum skin with the S/N 44-69972 of the aircraft and "Doc" engraved on the plate.
