$28-38K is barely touching on 50% of MSRP at the low end. I'm not sure I'd feel comfortable talking DOWN from $28K, and that would be on an Aero. I would feel like I was taking a big gamble at 1/3 MSRP. On a NM 9-5, that's NO warranty, NO trained mechanics, parts from iffy to probably none (the latter on the body, certainly). You drive the thing off the lot and five miles up the road have a sideswipe that messes up a lot of sheet metal- and you're hosed. Your only chance, and it's very chancy, would be finding a bodywork artist, someone who's basically a restorer.
And if I totalled it in 6 months, I'm not sure what my insurer would regard as "replacement."
We're driving a late middle-aged '04 9-5 wagon (130K), and our new car of choice (in the universe where SAAB is still going strong) would be a new 9-5. But the way I feel today I don't know if I'd pay $10K for one.
