THe General snow is a good one.,,,I also drove on Firestone winterforce for many years...but the strange part was that they wore down very slowly, so they're a bit hard and not as grippy as the General brand snow tire.
Turbocon86 has a great set for cheap, and look a lot like the Hakkapallita s.
I went FULL BORE last year and got a set of hakka studded tires.
My review is based solely on driving in no-winter conditions, as we did not have winter last year in the Northeast.
THey suck for dry driving. Dangerous almost. sliding around at a stop, feeling like a soft tractor going too fast.
THey'd be great for dirt roads that don't get plowed much, or western MA/VT roads in a real winter.
Overall, unless you know that you're up in the dirt-road mountains regularly, don't get studded tires...or at least not hakkas.
Don't get me wrong, you could climb a hill of ice, or stop going down that hill of ice, and they're sick performance-wise when there's snow on the roads...its kinda silly how much fun they are when there's 6+ inches of snow.
IF I had to do it again, I'd get the Hakkas that are not studded: hakka R.
