I'm closing on a house on or before September 14th and I'm trying to get homeowners insurance. I insure my cars with Geico and looked into Geico Homeowners insurance. They're teamed with "Homesite" Homeowners Insurance. Is there any reason NOT to use this company? I don't really know much about it. Is using a discount homeowners insurance company a bad idea?
I was going to switch over to Amica because my parents have an umbrella policy with them and like them a lot. But the home inspector I hired was a little too good at his job and made it sound like the house is going to fall in on itself and as soon as Amica saw his over-zealous report they ran away from me. The house is FINE. I had a contractor and my uncle come check it out after the inspection and yeah, it has some maintenance issues that have been neglected but nothing I can't take care of in a couple weeks. The inspector was tremendously thorough and reported every little detail. So now whenever an insurance company asks for the inspection report I'm probably just going to tell them I don't have one. They can come see the house and formulate their own opinion.
