What was done with electric vehicles 100 years ago or even 40-odd years back is sort of irrelevant. Cars with internal combustion engines weren't exactly ideal in 1912. Same with airplanes, home heating, household electricity, etc.
EVs are a technology challenge that will be solved. It requires engineering, new technology and infrastructure changes. And a decade or so of effort and investment in all those areas. There will be plenty of EVs and hybrids on the road in 2022, many used primarily for short distances. There'll be lots of IC cars on the road, too. 20 years out I'm betting EVs and hybrids will dominate.
