and polite, but make it absolutely clear that as the damaged party, and a customer of his/her insurance company, you expect fair treatment.

Danger Will Robinson! ALL insurance companies will try to get rid of you and your claim as quickly and as cheaply as possible. It costs them time and $$ to negotiate with you - and that's whjat this is - a negotiation. They offered you a settlement - but you DON'T have to accept it!

I won't go into the shenanigans our ins. company attempted to foist on us when our 9-5 wagon was rear-ended (and totalled) by a drunk. We stood our ground and ended up with almost DOUBLE what they offered us initially. Personally, I find the word "lawyer" to be a great help in these matters...

All insurance companies are sweetness and light when selling policies, but they turn into the cheapest, slipperiest things on earth when you have a problem or a claim!
