I've had an iPhone 3G, a 4, and now a 5. During the warranty periods of the 3G and 4 I went through a couple phones each due to various hardware issues. I guess the issues are repairable now that lots of independent iPhone repair ventures have popped up online, but they're kind of a crap shoot and you're without phone for a couple days. I've never shopped for a refurb so I don't know what's out there or what types of warranties are offered. I guess that's the only reason I'd be cautious about a used or refurbished phone. You're still going to pay the same amount of money for a used no-strings-attached phone as if you were buying the latest model with a renewal discount from your carrier in May.
